Off The Air

That concludes our American Month and, indeed, our activities for 2013. We'll be back next year. It's a bit early to say it, but what the hell, we could all be in prison tomorrow: Merry Christmas and thanks for your interest!

It's been a funny old year, hasn't it?

  1. Sorry, but what the fuck is going on in that second picture?

    1. Your question is perfectly understandable. It's hard to accept that back in the early 1980's the BBC decided to use this image as a publicity photograph, and the lack of concern it received at the time is equally astonishing.
      Crazy days.

  2. I understand that he's photoshopped it, just think it's in pretty poor taste.

    1. Well, I'm the one responsible for this image* and it's really quite simple; you either find the end result amusing, or you don't.
      I don't mind which.
*No children were harmed during the doctoring of that photograph.

And here's an article you may find thought-provoking. Well worth a read if you missed it.

    2. This is also necessary reading: http://www.lrb.co.uk/v34/n21/andrew-ohagan/light-entertainment.

PS I love John Peel's face in the other photo.

  3. I love this blog, but, we can talk how we are responsible for Savile, how he was ‘made to the public’s specifications' we can post humorous pictures, but that sometimes that ignores, or willfully insults, the experiences of his victims.

I'm sorry if I sound like Reverend Lovejoy's wife.

I do really enjoy the blog though.

  4. Thanks, Dr. B, I’ve thought long and hard about a response. It is tasteless, yes, and it was bound to cross a line with lots of people, but a lot of what we do here is tasteless and does cross lines. Now, I’m not pretending that we are truth guerrillas or anything daft like that, but I can assure you that the picture was created and posted in a spirit of revulsion not in a sniggering, schoolboy-ish way - it is not intended simply to raise a cheap laugh - just the opposite, in fact.

We are all appalled by these events and this picture was created in order to further demonise and condemn the evil, grinning villains of the piece, not to glorify them. JS and DLT have not been accused of eating babies – yet - but we wouldn’t put it past at least one of them.

Thanks for your kind words about the rest of the blog, we can’t promise not to upset you again, but please be assured that we’re not doing it just to be controversial or for a giggle.

  5. Thank Unmann-Wittering, I hope you don't think I'm some sort of paedo-geddon zealot, nor am I a moral crusader, I probably took out my annoyance of other media outlets on yourself. I will continue to visit often, I hope that's okay.
