Still Rolling

Stanley Spencer:
The Deposition and Rolling Away Of The Stone
(1956)

I saw this a couple of weeks ago at The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield, and can't get it out of my head. All those bendy figures at the top, like skinnier Beryl Cook characters in a religious frenzy. Who is the woman in the star spangled onesie? Who cut Jesus' hair? And in the bottom frame, the disciples / supplicants rolled into perfect balls - and that's not a cave, that's a nuclear bunker, surely? And the eyes follow you around the room, the sign of truly great art. It's quite incredible.
